Canalicular adenoma with unicystic morphology. A rare entity

2021

Background Canalicular adenoma (CA) is a benign salivary gland tumor (SGT) almost exclusively affecting the minor salivary glands, predominantly of the upper lip, and exhibiting characteristic histopathologic features. As observed in several other SGTs, a commonly encountered finding is the presence of prominent cystic morphology. Even though a multicystic appearance is usually noticed, solitary cystic CAs may rarely occur. Case report Two female patients (74 and 78 years old respectively) presented for the evaluation of submucosal asymptomatic masses of the oral cavity. In the 1st case a solitary nodule was noticed in the upper lip, while the 2nd patient exhibited two symmetrical lesions o…

Epithelial markers and differentiation in adnexal neoplasms of the skin: an immunohistochemical study including individual cytokeratins

1995

Applying immunohistochemical procedures for the detection of eight different cytokeratin (CK) polypeptides and other differentiation markers, we compared the staining patterns of normal cutaneous structures with those of benign adnexal tumors (n = 65). Syringomas exhibited a marker pattern highly reminiscent of that seen in normal dermal eccrine ducts (EMA in peripheral cells, CK 10 in intermediate cells, and CK 6, CK 19, and CEA in luminal cells). Nodular hidradenomas exhibited complex patterns suggesting relationship between tumor cells, including clear cells, and normal secretory coil cells (CK 7, CK 8, CK 19, and EMA); however, dermal-duct and epidermoid differentiation were also detect…

Electrochemotherapy in the treatment of cutaneous malignancy: Outcomes and subgroup analysis from the cumulative results from the pan-European Intern…

2020

Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is a treatment for both primary and secondary cutaneous tumours. The international Network for sharing practices on ECT group investigates treatment outcomes after ECT using a common database with defined parameters.Twenty-eight centres across Europe prospectively uploaded data over an 11-year period. Response rates were investigated in relation to primary diagnosis, tumour size, choice of electrode type, route of bleomycin administration, electrical parameters recorded and previous irradiation in the treated field.Nine hundred eighty-seven patients, with 2482 tumour lesions were included in analysis. The overall response (OR) rate was 85% (complete response [CR]: …

Incidence of lip malignancies in Germany-data from nine population-based cancer registries.

2017

Background The objective of this study was to analyse the incidence of lip malignancies in Germany. Methods Data from population-based cancer registries covering a population of 39 million inhabitants from 14 federal states were pooled. Lip malignancies were classified according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10). Age-standardised incidence rates and annual percentage changes in the incidence trends of lip cancer (C00), melanoma of the lip (C43.0), and non-melanoma skin cancer of the lip (C44.0) were calculated. Results Lip cancer (C00) incidence rate was 0.57/0.15 per 100 000 (men/women) in 2003 and 0.52/0.18 in 2012. In women, the change was statistically significant…

Beta-catenin and surviving expression in keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT). A comparative immunohistochemical study in primary, recurrent and nev…

2013

Aim: To determine the epithelial expression of ß-catenin and survivin in sporadic (primary, and recurrent) and nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) keratocystic odontogenic tumour (KCOT) in order to assess activation of the ß-catenin pathway and evidence of apoptotic inhibition, processes that may contribute to the known differences in their biological behaviour. Materials and Methods: Sections from 40 cases of KCOT (19 sporadic/primary; 9 sporadic/recurrent and 12 NBCCS-associated) were immunohistochemically stained for ß-catenin and survivin. The extent and intensity of immunoreactivity within the lining epithelium was assessed, using semi-quantitative scales, independently by two…

Occupational UV-Exposure is a Major Risk Factor for Basal Cell Carcinoma

2017

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of occupational and nonoccupational ultraviolet (UV)-exposure concerning the development of basal cell carcinoma (BCC).We undertook a population-based multicenter case-control study. Patients with first incident BCC (n = 836) were propensity score matched by age and sex to controls without skin cancer (n = 836). Sociodemographic characteristics, clinical characteristics, and lifetime UV-exposure were assessed by trained investigators. The differential estimation of occupational and nonoccupational UV-exposure dosages was based on validated instruments and established reference values. Associations were assessed using multivariable-adjusted c…

Methotrexate, Vinblastine, Epidoxorubicin, and Bleomycin as Second-Line Chemotherapy for Recurrent and/or Metastatic Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the H…

1994

Thirty evaluable patients with recurrent and/or metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck region previously treated with cisplatin-based chemotherapy were treated with a combination of methotrexate, vinblastine, epidoxorubicin, and bleomycin as second-line chemotherapy. Besides surgery and/or radiotherapy all patients had previously received chemotherapy as induction therapy or as palliation for recurrent disease. Only 20% of patients achieved a partial objective response with a mean duration of 5.6 months (range 3.2-6.2), and 30% of patients had a stabilization of disease with a mean duration of 4.2+ months (range 3.8-6.0). Patients who responded had rhinopharyngeal carcinoma…
